Richard C. Linstrom, Esq. Interview for Alumni Newsletter

Richard-LS Prior to joining KIMEP in 2022, was a consultant in the area of international academic affiliations. In addition to recent dean positions in Cambodia and Vietnam, he was head of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) branch campus in Singapore for three years and served as Vice President and General Counsel of UNLV for seven years before that.
Richard was with the Office of the Attorney General, State of Nevada for nearly a decade, where he served in a number of positions, including Assistant Solicitor General and Chief Deputy Attorney General in charge of the Las Vegas office. The Dean began his legal career in the U.S. state of Hawai’i, where he was a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Honolulu and then in private practice as a criminal defense trial and appellate lawyer.
  1. Can you briefly describe the LS graduate program?

Currently we have one graduate program, which leads to the Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree, specializing in International Law.

  1. What are the advantages of LL.M. degree?

Graduates enjoy a deep, working knowledge of international private law, in other words, the rules governing cross-border transactions between people and companies.

  1. What are the benefits of having an LL.M. in addition to a bachelor’s degree in International Law?

Students are admitted into the LL.M. program with undergraduate degrees other than those in legal fields, however it is not duplicative to start with a LL.B or Bachelor of International Law (B.I.L.) qualification. Such students will be able to apply knowledge gained during their bachelor’s education to more complex and specialized legal matters, and will learn how to do research at the graduate level.

  1. Why should one choose KIMEP LL.M. program, rather than other KZ or foreign universities? What advantages are the advantages of KIMEP?

All of the graduate faculty at KIMEP have their doctoral degrees from foreign universities- in Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United States- and so they are able to provide a truly international perspective and global standard of education here in Almaty. Not only is English the language of instruction, the environment at KIMEP is an international one. At the same time, you will have the opportunity to apply international law to real and important issues unique to Kazakhstan.

  1. Who needs to get an LL.M degree and why?

Those doing or hoping to do business with foreign entities or across international borders need more and more to have an LL.M or to hire somebody who does. This is the natural result of the rising complexity of the Kazakhstan economy and the increasing depth of our integration into the global economy.

  1. How long does it take to get the degree?

The program can be completed in one year, however it is not unusual to take longer owing to work and other obligations. Most of our students have or obtain employment while earning their degrees. Evening and weekend classes are available. They are currently in-person and not online.

  1. Are there scholarships available?

KIMEP University offers a variety of financial aid.

  1. What are some careers that will open up to me with a graduate law degree from KIMEP?

Private legal consultant, in-house lawyer, legal advisor to international organizations, as well as to governmental and non-governmental organizations are the traditional attorney occupations. In addition, many LL.M. holders function as leaders, managers and specialists in businesses, as well as entrepreneurs. Some also become educators.

  1. Who will be your classmates?

You will be in class with knowledgeable and engaged colleagues and competitors in the fields of international law and business, as well as an occasional new graduate

  1. What are your future plans for the Law School?

As I am new to KIMEP and Kazakhstan, I am still meeting with alumni and members of the legal community and conferring with our faculty. However, law schools globally are focusing on experiential learning in order to better prepare students for real-life practice and on comprehensive and efficient delivery of legal education. Because of its strong base of international faculty, our law school is well positioned to grow our enrollment as we perhaps re-focus on some of the basic subjects that are so essential to provide a firm foundation of legal knowledge.
