Bachelor of Information Systems

The Bachelor of Information Systems (BIS) program provides students with fundamental and advanced knowledge and skills in the field of information systems, software development and development and management of information systems. Graduates of the program also acquire fundamental knowledge of accounting, finance, management and marketing.

At successful completion of the Bachelor of information systems program, graduates will be able to:

  • demonstrate a proficiency in a second foreign language for efficient verbal and written business communication;
  • demonstrate and apply tools of mathematical and statistical analysis, and contemporary information technologies in solving managerial issues related to business processes and projects;
  • demonstrate and apply core business, management, and leadership principles and skills (in the field of management, marketing, operations management and business law), and integrate theory to practice aiming to solve managerial problems;
  • demonstrate and apply contemporary data collection methods related to business transactions and preparation of financial reports, as well as financial analysis and rational allocation of company’s resources;
  • detect and correct present and potential issues related to ethics, responsibility and sustainability in the field of management;
  • plan and manage the information system of a company, organization, design a database;
  • apply skills in structuring & analysis of raw data sets of different origin;
  • use of intelligent systems for analyzing big data and making decisions with minimized risks;
  • be able to create their own systems, subsystems of storage, data processing, big data;
  • create and adapt ready-made software for the needs of the company, organization;
  • apply different well-known methods of data analysis and visualization for reporting and decision making;
  • apply modern hardware and software packages that form an information system on a local and network

To earn the Bachelor of Information Systems degree, students must complete 146 KIMEP or 240 ESTS credits.

MINORS FOR STUDENTS OF THE BANG COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

Students are free to choose among different minors. They can also graduate without taking any minor. Graduating without a minor provides more flexibility in selecting elective courses because major requires students to take a particular set of courses.

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills relevant
to the study of motion. Students examine energy in its different forms, and how we describe and measure
electricity and magnetism and their interrelated effects.

GEN 1201 Mathematics for Business and Economics (3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

Prerequisites: None

The course develops the basic concepts of mathematical analysis used in economics and business with emphasis on
differentiation and integration of single real-variable functions and matrix algebra. The approach to these
concepts is intuitive and visual. The formal proofs are given only when they help in understanding concepts.
Applications to economics, business and social science as well as computational realizations are studied.

GEN2402 Business Statistical Analysis (3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

Prerequisites: GEN 1201 Mathematics for Business and Economics/MATH1202 Calculus

The course provides basic knowledge of probability, axioms of probability, expectation, joint and conditional
probability distributions, Bayesian concepts of statistical inference, exploratory data analysis and data
transformations, confidence limits, continuous probability distributions, sampling distributions, sampling
surveys, hypotheses testing, regression analysis, analysis of variance and correlation analysis.

MATH1202 Mathematics for Computer Science 1 (Calculus I)

Prerequisites: none

The course introduces the basic mathematical tools and methods needed for computer science. It teaches how to
develop the elementary mathematical skills needed to define, analyze and reason with the sorts of abstract
concepts used in programming and computer science.

MATH1204 Mathematics for Computer Science 2 (Calculus III)

Prerequisites: Mathematics for Computer Science 1

The course introduces the advanced mathematical tools and methods needed for computer science. It teaches the
principles of discrete and linear algebra applied in programming and computer science.

IFS2402 Probability and Mathematical Statistics

Prerequisites: Mathematics for Computer Science 1

The courses introduces probability theory and mathematical statistics. It teaches the concept and elementary
properties of probability space, and random variables and their probability distributions. The concept of
sampling, estimation, and hypotheses testing is also explained.

OPM3011 Decision Techniques and Tools (3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

Prerequisite: GEN1201 Mathematics for Business and Economics/MATH1202 Mathematics for Computer
Science 1 and FIN3121 Principles of Finance

The course provides the essential concepts of business mathematical methods and knowledge about computer tools
used for decision making and problem solving. It will deal with such topics as LP Solutions, Breakeven Analysis,
Sensitivity Analysis, Decision Trees, CPM/PERT, Time Series Analysis, Quantitative Forecasting Techniques,
Decision Support Systems & Spreadsheets. The course will have a lab section added to focus on application of
computer tools.

OPM3131 Introduction to Operations Management (3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

Prerequisite: GEN2402 Business statistical Analysis or IFS2402 Probability and Mathematical Statistics

This course is an overview of the fundamentals of operations management (OM) used in service and manufacturing
organizations. OM uses analytical thinking to deal with real world problems. Students will be introduced to the
application of effective operations management techniques: productivity management, product and process design,
job design, the planning and management of materials flows, manpower and capacity planning and scheduling,
project management, and quality management.

OPM3215 Business Time Series Forecasting (3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

Prerequisite: GEN2402 Business statistical Analysis

The course is devoted to advanced students who would like to refine their knowledge in applied statistics. The
course consists of forecasting models and techniques, such as exponential smoothing models, ARIMA models, neural
network techniques, rule-based forecasting, business forecasting. Commercial software such as SPSS and Neural
Networks Package will be used for practical applications. Examples of time series forecasting related to
marketing, operations, and finance are provided.

GEN/OPM 1300 Information & Communication Technologies or GEN/OPM2301 Business Computer Applications

Prerequisites: None

The purpose of the course is to introduce the background of computer and information technology principles to
beginners and pre-intermediate level students. The course involves uses of modern software, such as Microsoft
Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet and E-mail programs, which are necessary for studying at KIMEP. This
course is a broad overview of the main topics in business computer applications. Students gain an understanding
of computer architecture, networks, telecommunications; they learn how to apply information and knowledge
systems, operations and decision support systems, spreadsheets, databases to a wide range of tasks and decision
making process. The course emphasizes how organizations benefit from and use computer-based technology. The
purpose of the course is to foster business thinking through available technical means.

CIT1303 Information Systems and Networking

Prerequisites: GEN/OPM 1300 Information & Communication Technologies or GEN/OPM2301 Business
Computer Applications

This course focuses on the information systems and networking principles and best practices. In this course
students will learn the foundation concepts of computer hardware, software, operating systems, peripherals, etc.
along with how to get the most value and impact from computer technology. The course includes creating and
working with a computer network and network equipment.

IFS2203 Management Information Systems (3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

This course provides a broad overview of the information systems including their resources and components. In
addition the course discusses key managerial issues relating to implementation and application of information
systems in an enterprise, understanding the impact of information systems/ information technology on business
functions; outlining strategies for corporate growth based on the effective use and management of information
systems; analyzing business problems and developing the design for relevant information systems solutions;
understanding how information systems can be used to transform business processes and provide more effective
management control and decision systems.

IFS2204 Algorithms, Data structures, and Programming (3 credits; 5 ECTS)

Prerequisite: PHYS1201 Physics, MATH1202 Calculus

This course is designed for teaching students three main fundamental terms in software engineering – data
structures, algorithms, and programming. Students will learn types of data such as arrays, stacks, queues,
linked lists, binary search trees, heaps, and graphs, the syntax of data declaration and manipulation in
object-oriented programming language environment. Students will learn types of algorithms – linear, non-linear,
the possible algorithm presentation ways, algorithms that make use of such structures as for sorting, searching,
memory management. Students will also learn at least 2 programming languages at the examples of deciding
different computational, business problems.

CIT2731 Digital Graphics in Business (3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

Prerequisites: GEN/OPM 1300 Information & Communication Technologies or GEN/OPM2301 Business
Computer Applications

This course involves studies of computer graphics software; basis of computer graphics: vector, bitmap (raster),
2-, 3- dimensional software packages, graphics coding, etc. The course is emphasized on the use of computer
graphics in business (design of business cards, logo, booklets, leaflets, animated banners, billboards, etc.)
with Corel Draw 12, Corel Draw X5 as software package “3 in 1” combining vector and bitmap graphics facilities
(drawing with Corel Draw, image modifying with Corel Photo Paint, animating with Corel R.A.V.E.)

CIT2302 Database Management Systems in Business (3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

Prerequisite: GEN/OPM 1300 Information & Communication Technologies or GEN/OPM2301 Business
Computer Applications

This course covers fundamentals of databases & database management systems. The course introduces types and
models of data base logical organization, relational structure of database systems based on entity relationship
diagrams. The course contains basic principles of the relational database management systems with key fields and
relationship models, with database testing mechanisms via Normal forms. The course contains principles of

tools.

Software engineering is the application of a systematic disciplined quantifiable approach to the development,
operation and maintenance of software; the application of engineering to software. In the course there will be
given basic activities which are common to all software engineering process models: software specification –
functional requirements obtained from the user; software design and implementation – production of the software
system as a product; software validation – activity that assures that customer specifications are met; software
evolution – system modification to meet continuing customer needs.

This course introduces computer programming using JAVA Script and the basics of JAVA programming languages with
the principles of object-oriented programming. The emphasis is on event-driven programming methods, including

CIT3803 Python Programming (3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

In this course students will learn programming in Python which is a popular programming language. It was
created by Guido van Rossum, and released in 1991. It is used for: web development (server-side),software
development, mathematics, system scripting. Students will learn how to utilize Python program to create web
applications; to create workflows; to connect to database systems, to read and modify files; to handle big data
and perform complex mathematics; to rapid prototype; to do production-ready software development.

CIT3804 Engineering Computation and Data Science(3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

This course trains students to use and manage scientific data, whether it is in analyzing complex physical
systems or in using statistics and machine learning, along with data visualization to extract useful information

This course covers Big Data Fundamentals, including the characteristics of Big Data, the sources Big Data (such
as social media, sensor data, and geospatial data), as well as the challenges imposed around information
management, data analytics, privacy and security, as well as platforms and architectures. Data warehouses will
also be presented as a solution to handling big data and business intelligence applications. This course is for
understanding why the Big Data Era has come to be. This course provide students with the terminology and the

The course teaches Java, a popular general-purpose programming language and computing platform. It is fast,
reliable, and secure. According to Oracle, the company that owns Java, Java runs on 3 billion devices worldwide.
Considering the number of Java developers, devices running Java, and companies adapting it, it’s safe to say
that Java will be around for many years to come.

CIT3814 Programming in PHP (3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

Prerequisites: CIT2735 Introduction to Programming

The course teaches PHP, a popular general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited to web
development. The language has the ability to communicate back and forth with a server and create a dynamic web
page for the user.

CIT3815 Programming in SQL (3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

Prerequisites: CIT2735 Introduction to Programming

The course will teach SQL, a domain-specific language used in programming. The language is designed for managing
data held in a relational database management system, or for stream processing in a relational data stream
management system.

The course teaches the fundamental of Machine learning, a method of data analysis that automates analytical

The course teaches the hardware and software environment for laptops, tablets, smartphones and other portable

A decision support system (DSS) – is a computer system that encompasses mathematical models, informational
databases and a user interface to help managers make better decisions. This course is intended to develop an
appreciation of the nature of managerial business decision making as well as a working knowledge of Decision
Support Systems (DSS) for facilitating the process of semi-structured decision making. The course will help
students to gain proficiency in general solutions of operational business problems, using Decision Support
Systems released in spreadsheets at the examples of MS Excel, Google sheet (free cloud), released in free cloud
applications – such as Microsoft Power BI, and special commercial DSS software including IBM SPSS.

IFS4301 Introduction to Data Science (3 Credits; 5 ECTS)

This course covers the necessary tools and concepts used in the data science industry, including machine
learning, statistical inference, scaled data, and more. Students will learn the basics of retrieving data from a

languages such as R, Python, command line and spreadsheets for research and data manipulation. The course
contains topics on using methods for data analysis.

ERP Systems are used by large and midsize companies in order to support their daily business transactions,

A thesis is a research work on a topic that is in the area of Information Systems and Technology. Students will

Students can expect to develop and apply not only their critical, analytical and decision-making skills but also
those of written and oral communication.

Prerequisites: IFS4251.2 Internship Program in IS II or IFS4201.2 Cases in IS (substitute)

The consolidation and intensification of theoretical knowledge and skills acquired by students through the
process of theoretical learning; the formation of professional competence; the familiarization
with real industrial, technological, and organizational processes going on at the place of internship; the
mastering of the profession’s basics in the operational sphere: the familiarization with and acquirement of the
methodology and technology of professional problem-solving; the collection of the necessary for the preparation
and compilation of the internship report materials. Bases of internship are organizations related to careers in

Nejat Çapar received his Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the Florida State University and MBA from Temple University. He has previously taught at the Florida State University, American University of Sharjah, and Bilkent University among others and has been a guest lecturer at various universities. His work has been published in the Journal of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Proceedings, and Journal of Business Ethics among others. He served as an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of International Management during 2010-2018, and as an ad-hoc reviewer for various other academic journals. Overview Professor Nurmakhanova’s primary research interest focuses on studying the influence of oil prices on macroeconomic performance of the country. Specifically, she examines the effect of oil prices on the economic growth, real exchange rate, stock market, inflation rate, etc. Another research interest is related to performance of microfinance institutions:  extend of trade-off between financial sustainability and outreach of MFIs, effect of regulation on performance of microfinance institutions. Third research interest is related to stability of banking sector. Specifically, she examines the effect of bank market power on both the credit risk-taking attitude of Kazakhstani banks and overall stability of banks.
Research Interests ·         The Effect of Regulation on Performance of Microfinance Institutions: effect of regulation on MFIs performance. When evaluating the impact of regulation following questions are of primary interest: (1) what is the effect of regulation on performance of actually regulated MFI? and (2) what is the effect of regulation on performance of MFIs that opt for regulation once they start taking deposits? In a new contribution to existing literature, our results show the impacts of regulation on performance of actually regulated MFIs and MFIs that opt for regulation once they start taking deposits.

·         Stability of banking sector: effect of bank market power on both the credit risk-taking attitude of Kazakhstani banks and overall stability of banks.

·         Effect of oil prices: effect of oil prices on the economic growth, real exchange rate, stock market, inflation rate, etc.

Overview Professor Garkavenko research is focusing on the impact of information and communication technologies on distribution channels, cross-cultural marketing, service marketing, digital marketing, supplier-retailer-consumer relationships and consumer behavior as well as business practices in Central Asia. He also have a strong research interest in sustainable eco-tourism and hospitality, Health and Wellness Tourism Development in Kazakhstan, Heritage Tourism.

His particular research interest revolves around building a case study on KZ tourism industry to identify main issues in the emerging industry in the contest of “green economy”.  The research covers the structure of the KZ tourism industry and its main players, the core resources and attractions of the country as well as supporting factors such as infrastructure, accessibility, political will, some examples of the typical destination management and destination policy and planning such as quality of service experience, positioning and branding as well as monitoring and evaluation.  The research also focuses on the barriers to tourism development in the country and ICT adoption by the tourism industry and by the prospective consumers.

Overview Nurlan S. Orazalin has extensive teaching experience in the areas of accounting and finance. Dr. Orazalin has considerable practical and consulting experience and has worked with a variety of industries, including banking, oil and gas, constructions, communications, and manufacturing. In his current position, Dr. Orazalin teaches courses such as Introduction to Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Advanced Accounting, Financial Reporting and Management Control Systems, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), Auditing, Financial Statement Analysis, Introduction to Finance, Modern Research in Accounting etc. He has DBA in accounting from KIMEP University, Kazakhstan and MS in accounting from Texas A&M University, USA. He is a Certified Management Accountant and a Member of the Institute of Management Accountants of USA, and provides consulting services for domestic and international companies/banks. His research and professional interests are primarily focused on financial reporting, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, sustainability performance and integrated reporting, and fair value accounting. Dr. Orazalin is the author of several articles in peer- reviewed journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings. He received the best teacher award for outstanding teaching from KIMEP University in 2006 and the Kazakhstani business professor of the year award from the Lawyer, Academics and Consultants of Kazakhstan in 2009.

Overview Professor Ostrovsky’s primary research interest focuses on investigation and identification of social factors influencing on purchasing behavior of Kazakhstani consumers toward products manufactured in countries of Eurasian Economic Union and delivered on Kazakhstani market.

 

Research Interests Consumer behavior: Investigation of Kazakhstani consumers’ reactions toward products manufactured and delivered to the Kazakhstan from countries – members of Eurasian Economic Union, namely Kyrgyzstan and Armenia. Study reactions and preferences of Kazakhstani consumers toward products produced and delivered from China and Turkey, foreign products represented by specific trade categories. Investigation of influence of consumer ethnocentrism’s antecedents, such as socio-psychological, economic, political or demographic predictors on consumers’ preferences in purchasing of services or products.

Previously, he was a faculty member at Computer Engineering Department at Konya Chamber of Commerce Karatay University, Turkey, a software developer at Plasma Physics Institute at Max-Planck-Society, Munich, Germany, and a graduate intern at Wright Brothers Institute at US Air Force Research Lab, Dayton, Ohio and at IABG mbH, Munich, Germany. Oleg Vlasov is a Senior Lecturer of Information Systems and Accounting courses at the Bang College of Business, KIMEP University. Oleg joined the University faculty after receiving MBA degree. He has working experience as Financial Manager and Accountant. Currently, he teaches courses in Information Technology, Accounting and Management. Oleg has been actively involved in activities and development of the college – participated in creation of the first issue of KIMEP Yearbook, developed and has supported the department’s website, as well as developed online content for information systems courses. He is the author of numerous publications in scientific journals and international research conferences, as well as author of 1000+ pages of methodological materials for computerized accounting course on the basis of 1C: Enterprise 8.2. His research interests areas are business process optimization, E-learning, security of Information Systems, and development of business cases for Information Systems courses. The main mission is sharing his experience and knowledge to others through teaching, research, and participation in international research activities.

Hala Abdelgaffar is an Assistant Professor of Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior at KIMEP University.

Research Interests

She is predominantly interested in the individual behavior and organizational socio-cultural climate and norms that influence the effectiveness of core human resource management processes, and the challenges facing business schools in mainstreaming responsible management education in their academic activities and practices. Her current research focuses on career shock facing employees during crises, workplace challenges facing females in the MENA region, and psycho-social behaviors at the workplace. She has a wide portfolio of teaching expertise in OB and HRM at various levels of Higher Education (Undergraduate, Master, and MBA), and she has previously held teaching posts at Estonian Business School (EBS) and the American University in Cairo (AUC).

Hala’s research interests lie at the heart of human resource management examining how individuals can be motivated, inspired, engaged, and developed to perform better and more effectively. Her work has been published in leading academic journals including the Journal of Management Development; The International Journal of Management Education; Journal of Workplace Learning; International Journal of Public Administration; International Journal of Organizational Analysis; Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion: An International Journal; International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management; Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal; International Journal of Organizational Analysis; International Journal of Culture Tourism and Hospitality Research; Journal of Family Business Management; Tourism and Hospitality Research; and Asia-Pacific Journal of Business Administration.

Awards and Recognition

Hala’s Ph.D. thesis review article on ‘Responsible Management Education: practices, outcomes, and Challenges’ won the 2022 Emerald Literati Award for Outstanding Paper. She graduated with an honorary BA in English language and literature, traveled as a Fulbright scholar to complete the international teacher training institute at Saint Bernardino, California, U.S.A., became a university fellow at AUC, Egypt, then later an international examiner for Cambridge Australia, and a certified UKIV and Life Skills examiner, Cambridge, UK, and was recently nominated and completed content creation for an open access national mega project with AUC.

Teaching

Her teaching, mentorship, and workshops are infused with insights from her research and consultancy, as well as her strong international experience (aside from her homeland Egypt, she has lived, worked, and/or studied as an academic scholar in Estonia, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, U.S.A., and the Netherlands).

She is highly committed to the future of management education, and she is particularly interested in the development of early-career academicians.

Mohd Zain Bin Mohamed, PhD

Professor M. Zain Mohamed received his PhD (Management) from the Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, UK, in 1993. Prior to joining KIMEP University in August 2023, Prof. Zain was a Professor of Management in several AACSB/EQUIS accredited universities including Sultan Qaboos University, Oman; King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia; Qatar University; University of Dubai, UAE; United Arab Emirates University; and Universiti Putra Malaysia. He was also a Visiting Professor at the college of business/economics of the Tashkent State Technical University, Uzbekistan, and the University of Mauritius. Before becoming an academic in December 1980, Prof. Zain was an IT Consultant with the Information Systems Consulting Division of Arthur Andersen & Company (now known as Accenture), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Prof. Zain’s research interests are in the areas of innovation and technology management, information management, competitiveness of firms, entrepreneurship, and corporate strategies.  His publications have appeared in many refereed and scholarly international journals including Asia Pacific Journal of Marketing and Logistics, Creativity and Innovation Management, Information & Management, International Journal of Information Management, International Journal of Innovation Management, International Journal of Project Management, Journal of Global Competitiveness, Journal of Islamic Marketing, Scandinavian Journal of Management, Services Marketing Quarterly, Social Behavior and Personality, Technovation, and Thunderbird International Business Review. Prof. Zain has also undertaken many consulting projects with public and private organizations in Malaysia in the areas of technology mapping, competitiveness of industries, project feasibility studies, market surveys, business processes and systems, and social & economic studies.

Norizan Binti Mohd Kassim, PhD

Professor Norizan Mohd Kassim specializes in marketing and holds a Ph.D. from Southern Cross University in New South Wales, Australia, which she obtained in 2002. Her research interests are in cross-cultural studies, consumer behavior, service quality, customer satisfaction, customer loyalty, service innovation, the competitiveness of organizations, and entrepreneurship. She has collaborated actively with researchers in several other management disciplines. She has published numerous articles in reputable international journals, including the Journal of Business Research, the European Journal of Marketing, the Asia Pacific Journal of Marketing and Logistics, the Asia Pacific Business Review, the International Journal of Quality & Reliability Management, the International Journal of Innovation Management, and the Electronic Markets. Prior to her affiliation with KIMEP University, she held the position of Professor and Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies and Research in the College of Economics, Management, and Information Systems at the University of Nizwa in Nizwa, Oman. Since May 2019, she has been Technical Director for the Oman Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Project. Additionally, she held academic positions in universities accredited by AACSB in Malaysia and abroad. Some universities included in this list are the United Arab Emirates University, Qatar University, King Abdulaziz University, and the University of Dubai. Before pursuing an academic career, she acquired substantial expertise across multiple sectors, such as banking, finance, and stock brokerage, for a considerable period.

Dennis Orlenn Olson, PhD

Prior to coming to KIMEP, Dennis Olson was a visiting scholar at Oregon State University-Cascades in the USA. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Wyoming (USA) and a Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, as well as the American professional designations of Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and Chartered Life Underwriter CLU).

He has taught economics, finance, and accounting classes in the US, Canada, New Zealand, Denmark, Colombia, Oman, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). His research primarily uses econometric techniques to address issues in banking, investments, corporate finance, economic efficiency, and public finance. This research has appeared in journals, such as, the Journal of Banking and Finance, International Journal of Accounting, Journal of Corporate Finance, European Economic Review, International Journal of Forecasting, Economic Inquiry, Southern Economic Journal, Energy Economics, Emerging Markets Review, and Financial Review.

Outside of academia, he is married with two grown children who previously accompanied him to various universities around the world. His hobbies include traveling, fishing, golf, chess, and learning languages.
