Mission of the program
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Business prepares graduates for careers in research, teaching, and consulting in the various functional areas of business.
The main objective of the program is to strategically affect all business and economics education in Central Asia, and foster international business techniques to assist in the development of Kazakhstan economy and educational system. With a team of internationally renowned professors and researchers and extensive partnerships with some of the top business schools in the world, we are well prepared to deliver a quality Ph.D. program unrivalled in the entire region.
The Ph.D. program’s distinct academic approach is designed to enable students to excel as researchers, educators, and scholars in the future. Throughout Ph.D. Studies experience, students focus on one of four areas of study.

Grade Point Average
A student must maintain a cumulative 3.33 GPA throughout the program. Courses in which grades below “B-” are received but are not accepted for the Ph.D. degree. Grades received in courses transferred from another institution are not included in calculation of the grade point average. If a grade of “C+” or lower is received, the student should repeat the course. More than one retake should acquire an approval from the Council. When the GPA is calculated, the grade for the repeated course will substitute for the original grade. Grades of “I” turn to “F” if work is not completed by the 7th week of the following semester.

Research and Pedagogical Internship
Internship gives Ph.D. students an opportunity to put into practice the knowledge acquired during their studies, get some business and academic experience and be better prepared for their future career.
Research Work
Under this component of the Ph.D. program, requirement to undertake appropriate research activities that lead to conference presentations, journal publications and international internship abroad.
Dissertation and Ph.D. Dissertation Defense
Ph.D. dissertation is a scholarly research work, involving the analysis of a specific problem in the area of specialization, evaluation of the results of the analysis, which serves as a basis for developing specific proposals and implementing the appropriate solution to the problem. The student will present an oral defense of their dissertation in front of the members of the dissertation committee, in a public forum.

Admission Requirements
Admission to the Ph.D. program is highly competitive. Admission is granted to candidates deemed most likely to complete and benefit from the program. The final decision on admission is based on a comprehensive assessment of the applicant’s overall qualifications, motivation, determination and commitment to the program.
1. Completed graduate degree
- Copy of a diploma confirming the completion of a graduate degree “master”
- Copy of transcripts (diploma supplement) with grades
2. Possession of the valid international certificates proving the knowledge of the English Language
- IELTS – at least 5,5
- TOEFL IBT – at least 46
- TOEFL PBT – at least 453
Additional consideration by a selection committee:
- At least 3 years of experience in a corporate, government, academia or non-profit organization
- At least two professional letters of recommendation;
- Official GMAT score of at least 600 or equivalent KGET 20/50
- A research proposal that states candidate’s area of research interests, research questions and methodological approach to undertake your research. To develop a successful proposal, you need to familiarize with current research through literature review in the area and identify research gaps, thus creating an original research proposal;
- An Interview with program admissions committee;
- A professional resume;
- Additional exams required by MES.

Educational Background and Bio:
Nejat Çapar received his Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the Florida State University and MBA from Temple University. He has previously taught at the Florida State University, American University of Sharjah, and Bilkent University among others and has been a guest lecturer at various universities. His work has been published in the Journal of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Proceedings, and Journal of Business Ethics among others. He served as an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of International Management during 2010-2018, and as an ad-hoc reviewer for various other academic journals. He has been active in reviewing and presenting papers at the Academy of Management and Academy of International Business Conferences. His research interests include international diversification and performance relationships, the interrelationships between diversification, firm resources and performance, as well as cross-cultural differences in management.

Her professional background is comprised of work in the private sector, academia, and international non-governmental organization. Her teaching experience includes lecturing at Kazakh-British Technical University in Kazakhstan and at ESCP Europe Business School in France.

Financial Economics from the University of New Orleans, USA. His experience includes working as a Professor of Finance at the Crummer Graduate School of Business. Professor Kiymaz also taught at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, Bilkent University, and the University of New Orleans. Overview | Nurlan S. Orazalin has extensive teaching experience in the areas of accounting and finance. Dr. Orazalin has considerable practical and consulting experience and has worked with a variety of industries, including banking, oil and gas, constructions, communications, and manufacturing. In his current position, Dr. Orazalin teaches courses such as Introduction to Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Advanced Accounting, Financial Reporting and Management Control Systems, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), Auditing, Financial Statement Analysis, Introduction to Finance, Modern Research in Accounting etc. He has DBA in accounting from KIMEP University, Kazakhstan and MS in accounting from Texas A&M University, USA. He is a Certified Management Accountant and a Member of the Institute of Management Accountants of USA, and provides consulting services for domestic and international companies/banks. His research and professional interests are primarily focused on financial reporting, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, sustainability performance and integrated reporting, and fair value accounting. Dr. Orazalin is the author of several articles in peer- reviewed journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings. He received the best teacher award for outstanding teaching from KIMEP University in 2006 and the Kazakhstani business professor of the year award from the Lawyer, Academics and Consultants of Kazakhstan in 2009. |

Dr. Arslan is an Assistant Professor of Accounting & Finance in Bang College of Business (BCB) at KIMEP University. He holds a Ph.D. in Accounting and Finance from Lincoln University, New Zealand. He is the recipient of the Dean’s Award for his Ph.D. thesis from Lincoln University, New Zealand. He also received two Emerald Literati Awards “Highly Commended Paper” in 2019 and 2020. He is the Fellow of the Institute of Financial Accountants (FFA), United Kingdom and Fellow of the Institute of Public Accountants (FIPA), Australia. He is also a certified peer reviewer from Publons Academy and Web of Science (WOS), Clarivate.
Before joining KIMEP, he worked at Lincoln University and New Zealand tertiary institute(s) where he taught a wide range of accounting and finance courses, such as Management Accounting, Financial Accounting, Financial Reporting and Management Control, Quantitative Methods, Corporate Finance, International Finance, Portfolio and Behavioural Finance, Principles of Finance, Advanced Financial Management, Financial Statement Analysis and Reporting at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels.
Dr. Arslan’s research interests include, but are not limited to; corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, compensation, auditing, ownership structure, and economic issues. He is an active researcher and has published several articles in international peer-reviewed journals. So far, he has authored three book chapters. He has successfully supervised and examined more than a dozen master’s students. He is currently supervising one Ph.D. student. Dr. Engin Mendi received his PhD degree in Integrated Computing from University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), two MS degrees, one in Applied Science from UALR and the other in Computational Engineering from Technical University of Munich, Germany and BS degree in Civil Engineering from Middle East Technical University, Turkey. Previously, he was a faculty member at Computer Engineering Department at Konya Chamber of Commerce Karatay University, Turkey, a software developer at Plasma Physics Institute at Max-Planck-Society, Munich, Germany, and a graduate intern at Wright Brothers Institute at US Air Force Research Lab, Dayton, Ohio and at IABG mbH, Munich, Germany. His research interests are in the areas of image-video processing, health informatics and mobile application development. He has published and co-authored more than 30 publications, over 10 journal papers, 1 book chapter and numerous conference papers.

Practical Experience | Ruslan has seven years of experience in audit and preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the International Financial Reporting Standards. Being part of UK team during 2013-2015 Ruslan was deeply involved into the audit of cross national companies with headquarters based in UK, US and Australia with the UK and US GAAP reporting requirements. On a top of that Ruslan participated in internal audit engagements with subsequent consultation on tax, financial reporting and risk management issues of the companies’ management based in CIS countries and UK.
