Overview | Despite clear evidence of widespread corporate earnings manipulation, research models have been surprisingly poor at predicting the conditions and variables which give rise to manipulation. Findings suggest the explanatory power of accrual models coefficients is influenced by tail data artifact and hetroscedastisity. My research interests are to revisit accrual models with respect to two adjustments necessary to preserve the integrity of earnings quality models. Firstly, to identify a need for filters that cut-off idiosyncratic observations related to business situations that alter “conditional” relationships among model variables; demonstrate the inadequacy of data trimming or winsorising which are inadequate to classify data into homogeneous clusters of business conditions. Secondly, to identify sufficiency of removing idiosyncratic observations to shield against heteroscedasticity; to re-estimate models coefficients, by computing heteroscedasticity consistent variance-covariance matrices, and test if it leads to a decrease in significance of coefficients for all “classical” models; to assess if understanding and proper separation of sample clusters is likely to determine the future of these models usage.
Professor Makarov’s research has been published in Journal of Communication in Statistics, Journal of Business, Economics and Finance, and Journal of International Business and Economics. |

Overview | Professor Jang’s primary research interests are focused on the relations between physical elements (i.e. location, color, presentation order, and presentation mode) and consumers’ responses in marketing communication context (i.e., advertisement). Specifically, she tries to explore the different consequences depending on manipulated experimental condition of physical elements in advertisement even though consumers face the identical information. In this context she is also focused on the psychological mechanism to provide the explanation, that is, the reason why consumers show different responses in this process. Most recently she got engaged in studying the cultural difference between Westerner and Easterner and try to examine why consumers show difference responses across the different culture as well as how they might be different each other.
For the academic research, the kinds of questions that Professor Jang explores in her research include: What counts as effective elements in marketing communication including online and offline advertisement? How is this positioned in marketing theories and practices? She continues to nourish her interest in marketing communication. Particularly she is looking for the notable and contributable effect both for academic researcher as well as marketing managers Professor Jang’s research has published in Marketing letters, Journal of Distribution Science and etc.. |
