Internship, Thesis and Comprehensive Exam (Total 8 credits)
An internship and research work, including a thesis, are required. Students without a major will undertake their internship and thesis in general business or in any major/minor area.

The course is aimed at those who have little or no knowledge of accounting. The course focuses on the basic theoretical framework of accounting principles considering various accounting techniques and their effect on financial statements. Students will gain an understanding of the concepts and language of accounting that can be used as an effective tool for communication, monitoring, and resource allocation. They will also gain mastery of the vocabulary and meaning of financial statements and accounting reports. Basic financial statement analysis methods are introduced.

This course provides MBA students with an overview of different issues related to financial accounting and management control systems. It is designed to consolidate students’ understanding of the IFRS standards and students’ ability to utilize aspects of accounting theory to resolve major reporting issues. Through the development of a solid understanding the importance, language and techniques of accounting, students achieve important skills for preparation and analysis of financial statements for better management planning, decision making and control.

Kazakhstan is moving towards using International Accounting Standards as national accounting reporting standards. This course bridges the gaps between the Kazakhstan Accounting Standards, Kazakhstan Chart of Accounts, GAAP methods and the methods used in International Financial Reporting Standards. Upon completion, the students will be prepared to conduct business in Kazakhstan using past records and current methods.

This course develops a deeper understanding of financial accounting. This course is a survey of the tax structure including concepts and policies, which shape the law. Emphasis will be on general concepts applicable to all taxpayers and on taxation of individuals. This course extends and upgrades the knowledge obtained in Auditing to a professional level, preparing students for entry positions in the international Accounting Firms. The course is designed to enhance students’ knowledge of auditing procedures, auditing standards and other standards related to attest engagements and the skills needed to apply that knowledge to auditing and other attest engagements.

ACC5217 Fraud Examination (3 Credits)

The course is intended to provide fundamental and practical knowledge for all students to learn about the global threat of fraud and to prepare for careers in the anti-fraud profession. The students will be able to identify and assess appropriate fraud risk factors by increasing the body of anti-fraud knowledge in the current audit environment, in which the identification of the fraud risk factors by auditors is required by law or standards and emphasized.  The knowledge gained from this course, which regular auditing course do not fully cover due to limited time frame, should be instrumental for the detection and deterrence of fraud in any types of audits.

BUSINESS AREA
ACC/FIN/MGT/MKT5270 MBA Credit Internship Program (3 Credits)

Prerequisites: Completion of at least 18 credits of course work and ACC5203/FIN5202/MKT5202/MGT5201 depending on students’ specialization

Internship gives MBA students the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge acquired during their studies, get some business experience and be better prepared for their future career. Credit Internship Program can be taken after completion of 24 credit hours in the MBA program.  The minimum internship period is 160 hours of job experience of managerial nature. After completion of internship, students submit an Internship Report and other required documents. Students will be assigned a faculty supervisor who will monitor internship and evaluate the Internship Report. Internship should be in the field of chosen specialization. Students have to attend at least 3 Preparatory Internship Training Sessions prior to becoming an intern. For details on Credit Internship Program, students are advised to seek information from BCB Career Services Center and/or the Director of the MBA program.

This course surveys the basic concepts and tools of Financial Management. The major objectives of this course are to learn the fundamental principles of finance and to obtain a broad perspective of the area of Financial Management. This course is divided into two 7-week modules. One module develops macroeconomic concepts and models that are useful for business decisions. Emphasis is placed on Keynesian models of income and interest determination (IS-LM), and open economy models of exchange rate determination. This module is designed as a Prerequisites for International Finance. The other module develops microeconomic techniques that assist business decision-making: analysis of generalized demand relations, production and cost functions, profit maximization, competition theory, and dynamic strategies (game theory). While there is no Prerequisites, the course is designed for students with an intermediate background in economic theory.

This course focuses on understanding of the major financial institutions and the competitive and regulatory environment in which they operate. This course offers an introduction to derivative markets. A derivative is an instrument whose value depends on the values of other more basic underlying variables. Credit risk is one of the major risks faced by financial institutions. Market risk is the risk that asset prices will change due to adverse movements in market conditions. This course focuses on the strategy of the firm, examining issues central to its short-term and long-term competitive position. Students are placed in the role of key decision makers and asked to address questions related to the creation or retention of competitive advantage. The initial focus is on industry analysis and identifying opportunities for competitive advantage followed by recognition of firm-specific capabilities or core competencies that contribute to competitive advantage, followed by exploring ways to use those distinctive competencies to establish sustainable competitive advantage(s) in the marketplace. Students will have an opportunity to understand and apply different techniques, tools, and approaches necessary for identifying a company’s key factors for success. This course addresses important branding decisions faced by organizations. The objectives are: to increase the students’ understanding of important issues in planning and evaluating brand strategies; to highlight appropriate theories, models, and other tools that enhance branding decisions; and to provide a forum for students to apply these principles. Particular emphasis is on understanding the customers’ psychological principles, resulting in improved managerial decision-making regarding brands. The course will make these concepts relevant to most types of organization (public or private, large or small). During the course students will be introduced to the theoretical concepts of branding and brand management. Interactive learning integrates theory into practice through case studies, analysis of video materials, and analysis of brand strategies for the company operating in Kazakhstan and its presentation.

Students will understand the applications of strategic forecasting, value chain, inventory flow, MRP, vendor selection and evaluation, purchasing and subcontracting, contract preparations, management of integrated project planning and financial analysis for global supply chain management.

OPM 5204 Advanced Quantitative Research Methods for Business (3 credits)

The course aims to develop the student’s ability to apply some advanced quantitative methods for their theses research. It will cover such topics as: basics of matrix and vector algebra, multivariate normal distribution, multivariate multiple linear regression, principal components and factor analysis, simultaneous equation models, neural networks, and non-linear models created by the group method of data handling (GMDH) algorithm.

Nejat Çapar received his Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the Florida State University and MBA from Temple University. He has previously taught at the Florida State University, American University of Sharjah, and Bilkent University among others and has been a guest lecturer at various universities. His work has been published in the Journal of International Business Studies, Academy of Management Proceedings, and Journal of Business Ethics among others. He served as an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of International Management during 2010-2018, and as an ad-hoc reviewer for various other academic journals. He has been active in reviewing and presenting papers at the Academy of Management and Academy of International Business Conferences. His research interests include international diversification and performance relationships, the interrelationships between diversification, firm resources and performance, as well as cross-cultural differences in management.

Overview Dr. Yuliya Frolova is Associate Professor at the Bang College of Business, KIMEP University, Almaty city, Republic of Kazakhstan. In the academic year 2017-2018, she was an Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs at the Bang College of Business. Previously she was a Chair of Management and Marketing Department for 1.5 years.

 

Dr. Yuliya Frolova also serves as IMA (Institute of Management Accountants, USA) Campus Advocate for KIMEP University. Campus Advocates are committed to understanding and conveying the benefits of IMA membership to students majoring in accounting, finance, and information technology to prepare them for successful careers in the field of managerial finance and accounting.

 

In Fall 2013, Dr. Yuliya Frolova taught management and accounting as a Visiting Assistant Professor at  Monfort College of Business, University of Northern Colorado, Greeley city, USA.

 

Dr. Yuliya Frolova holds DBA degree with major in management and minors in accounting and business law; MBA degree with majors in accounting and finance; and BSC degree in Business Administration with major in accounting. She also has professional qualifications in accounting for her knowledge of international accounting theory and practice and her relevant work experience in this field: Certified Management Accountant (CMA), USA; Professional Accountant, Russia; and Certified Accounting Practitioner (CAP), Kazakhstan.

 

Dr. Yuliya Frolova has been judged by KIMEP University to be academically qualified in management and professionally qualified in accounting under the AACSB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) guidelines. She teaches a variety of courses in management and accounting at undergraduate and graduate levels. He has working experience as Financial Manager and Accountant. Currently, he teaches courses in Information Technology, Accounting and Management. Oleg has been actively involved in activities and development of the college – participated in creation of the first issue of KIMEP Yearbook, developed and has supported the department’s website, as well as developed online content for information systems courses. He is the author of numerous publications in scientific journals and international research conferences, as well as author of 1000+ pages of methodological materials for computerized accounting course on the basis of 1C: Enterprise 8.2. His research interests areas are business process optimization, E-learning, security of Information Systems, and development of business cases for Information Systems courses. The main mission is sharing his experience and knowledge to others through teaching, research, and participation in international research activities.

Overview Nurlan S. Orazalin has extensive teaching experience in the areas of accounting and finance. Overview Despite clear evidence of widespread corporate earnings manipulation, research models have been surprisingly poor at predicting the conditions and variables which give rise to manipulation. Findings suggest the explanatory power of accrual models coefficients is influenced by tail data artifact and hetroscedastisity. My research interests are to revisit accrual models with respect to two adjustments necessary to preserve the integrity of earnings quality models. Firstly, to identify a need for filters that cut-off idiosyncratic observations related to business situations that alter “conditional” relationships among model variables; demonstrate the inadequacy of  data trimming or winsorising which are inadequate to classify data  into homogeneous clusters of business conditions. Secondly, to identify sufficiency of removing idiosyncratic observations to shield against heteroscedasticity; to re-estimate models coefficients, by computing heteroscedasticity consistent variance-covariance matrices, and test if it leads to a decrease in significance of coefficients for all “classical” models; to assess if understanding and proper separation of sample clusters is likely to determine the future of these models usage.

Professor Makarov’s research has been published in Journal of Communication in Statistics, Journal of Business, Economics and Finance, and Journal of International Business and Economics.

Bio:

Dr. Muhammad Arslan joined the Bang College of Business (BCB) as Assistant Professor of Finance. Before joining KIMEP, he worked at Lincoln University and New Zealand tertiary institute(s) where he taught accounting and finance courses. He completed his Ph.D. in Accounting and Finance from Lincoln University, New Zealand. His doctoral thesis explored the institutional determinants of good corporate governance (CG) practices in emerging market(s) and investigated their link with CG compliance and firm performance by using exploratory sequential research design. Dr. Arslan has four years of teaching experience along with industry and administrative experience.

Dr. Arslan has presented his research work at conferences such as New Zealand Finance Colloquium (NZFC), International Conference of the Journal of International Accounting Research (JIAR), International Corporate Governance Society (ICGS), AOM specialized conference(s), International Conference of Corporate Governance, Ownership and Control, CIA International Conference, and AFU International Conference and has published several articles in international peer-reviewed journals. So far, he has authored two book chapters. He is also serving as Editorial Board Member and Reviewer at different journals such as Cogent Economics and Finance, Journal of Financial Economic Policy, Management Decision, Heliyon, Journal of Asia Business Studies, and Journal of Family Business Management among others. Overview Professor Nurmakhanova’s primary research interest focuses on studying the influence of oil prices on macroeconomic performance of the country. Specifically, she examines the effect of oil prices on the economic growth, real exchange rate, stock market, inflation rate, etc. Another research interest is related to performance of microfinance institutions:  extend of trade-off between financial sustainability and outreach of MFIs, effect of regulation on performance of microfinance institutions. Third research interest is related to stability of banking sector. Specifically, she examines the effect of bank market power on both the credit risk-taking attitude of Kazakhstani banks and overall stability of banks.
Research Interests ·         The Effect of Regulation on Performance of Microfinance Institutions: effect of regulation on MFIs performance. When evaluating the impact of regulation following questions are of primary interest: (1) what is the effect of regulation on performance of actually regulated MFI? and (2) what is the effect of regulation on performance of MFIs that opt for regulation once they start taking deposits? In a new contribution to existing literature, our results show the impacts of regulation on performance of actually regulated MFIs and MFIs that opt for regulation once they start taking deposits.

·         Stability of banking sector: effect of bank market power on both the credit risk-taking attitude of Kazakhstani banks and overall stability of banks.

In 2010, Olga Pak was a visiting faculty at the business school of the University of Pittsburgh (USA).

Olga’s primary research interests focus on banking performance and stability in the light of ongoing integration processes and introduction of Basel III micro and macro-prudential regulation the  countries of the Eurasian region.

Overview Professor Garkavenko research is focusing on the impact of information and communication technologies on distribution channels, cross-cultural marketing, service marketing, digital marketing, supplier-retailer-consumer relationships and consumer behavior as well as business practices in Central Asia. He also have a strong research interest in sustainable eco-tourism and hospitality, Health and Wellness Tourism Development in Kazakhstan, Heritage Tourism.

Dana Abeuova is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Management and Marketing at KIMEP University. She received her Ph.D. in Management from ESCP Business School, as part of the École Doctorale de Management Panthéon-Sorbonne, France; M.S. in Information Systems from Kelley School of Business, Indiana University Bloomington, USA; B.S. in Informatics from School of Informatics, Indiana University Bloomington, USA.

Her professional background is comprised of work in the private sector, academia, and international non-governmental organization. Her teaching experience includes lecturing at Kazakh-British Technical University in Kazakhstan and at ESCP Europe Business School in France.

Overview Professor Ostrovsky’s primary research interest focuses on investigation and identification of social factors influencing on purchasing behavior of Kazakhstani consumers toward products manufactured in countries of Eurasian Economic Union and delivered on Kazakhstani market.

 

Research Interests Consumer behavior: Investigation of Kazakhstani consumers’ reactions toward products manufactured and delivered to the Kazakhstan from countries – members of Eurasian Economic Union, namely Kyrgyzstan and Armenia. Study reactions and preferences of Kazakhstani consumers toward products produced and delivered from China and Turkey, foreign products represented by specific trade categories. Investigation of influence of consumer ethnocentrism’s antecedents, such as socio-psychological, economic, political or demographic predictors on consumers’ preferences in purchasing of services or products.

Overview I am a Senior Lecture of Information Systems in Bang College of Business, KIMEP University. I received Ph.D. in Business administrator from Korea University. My primary research interest is cybersecurity/information security, gamification, digital business, online community, design science in Information System area. My currently research focuses on bring knowledge from different field to gain novel theoretical insights on improving the security behavior, which is derived from IT artifact.
