Central Asia Language and Education Conference

Call for Papers

Call for papers: Central Asia Language and Education Conference (CALE)

The call for papers for CALE 2023 is now closed. Non-presenting participants are very welcome – please see “Registration” for more information.

Abstract submissions are invited to the second Central Asia Language and Education Conference (CALE) to be hosted by KIMEP University in Almaty, Kazakhstan on May 18-19, 2023. This conference welcomes researchers working on language education, sociolinguistics, linguistics, second language acquisition, TESOL, and related disciplines. Although the conference overall has a special interest in how issues of language and language education play out in Central Asia, papers do not need to be related to Central Asia, and researchers do not need to be based in the region.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Language Education for Peace and Equality”. Papers are encouraged to address this theme but not required. We welcome papers related to all topics listed below.

Individual paper presentations should report on original research by one or more authors. Individual papers will be allocated 20 minutes for presentation plus 5 minutes for discussion.

First authors, presenters, and other attending participants must register for the conference. Each participant may submit only one abstract as the first or sole author, but can be a second, or subsequent, co-author of another paper or papers.

The working languages of the conference will be English, Kazakh, and Russian. Plenary talks will be held in English, but abstracts may be submitted in any of the three working languages.

The conference will be free of charge but registration is required.

The conference will be held in person in Almaty. We are currently discussing the possibility of offering some presentations via Zoom but the primary mode of participation will be offline. More information about this reception will be provided after registration.

Papers presented at the conference will be eligible for publication in the journal Language, Culture, Environment (https://www.kimep.kz/lcej/). Further information about publication opportunities is forthcoming.

For further information please see the conference website: https://www.kimep.kz/college-humanities-education/en/che-conference/

Program

The conference will take place over two days, May 18-19. The preliminary program will be updated in March, 2023

Venue and Travel

The conference will be hosted at KIMEP University, an English-medium, American-style university in beautiful Almaty, Kazakhstan. We are one of the leading universities in Central Asia and have a lovely, recently renovated campus in a central part of Almaty. There are many cafes, restaurants, grocery stores, and other shops within easy walking distance of the university, and Almaty generally is a safe and very walkable city.

The nearest airport is Almaty International Airport (ALA), which is connected by direct flight to a number of cities in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, including Hong Kong, Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, and Kuala Lumpur. The airport is located 15 km from Almaty city center and downtown is reachable by taxi, at a cost of approximately 2000 – 3000 tenge ($5.50 – 9.00 USD) for a ride lasting 25 – 40 minutes.

Kazakhstan has visa-free entry for up to 30 days for citizens of 45 countries (listed here: https://www.kazakhembus.com/content/visa-free-regime-info-non-us-citizens). Citizens of other countries must apply for a tourist visa through their local Kazakh embassy. KIMEP can assist with this process / securing letters of invitation if required.

Local travel and daily costs are inexpensive in Almaty – if participants stay at nearby hotels, they can easily walk to the university, take public transportation (80 tenge / ticket – $0.20 USD), or order taxis through apps like Uber or Yandex (available in English and other languages) – average rides within Almaty city center are usually between 400 – 800 tenge / $1-2 USD. There are a range of restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores near the university – a meal in a restaurant typically ranges from 1000 – 4000 tenge ($2.70 – $11 USD).

Accommodation

There are a number of accommodation options in Almaty within close distance of KIMEP to suit a wide variety of budgets. More detailed information about accommodation will be updated in January 2020.
