Christopher B. Primiano is an assistant professor of international relations at KIMEP University. Chris is author of China, the UN and Human Rights: Implications for World Politics (Routledge Press).

In addition, his articles have appeared in Journal of Chinese Political Science, Peace Economics, Peace Science and Public Policy, East Asia, Asia Pacific Journal of Sport and Social Science, International Politics, China: An International Journal, China Report, and Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs.

Dr. Da Hoon Chung joins KIMEP as research fellow for one academic year. Dr. Chung pursued her Ph.D. degree in Chinese politics and diplomacy at Peking University, China. She has a keen interest in the international relations of Asian countries which came from her global academic experience. She is expanding her view to encompass Eurasian Continent in recognition of the importance Central Asia and Russia plays in global politics, not to mention its role in the unification of the Korean Peninsula. She is currently working on North Korea-related research at the DPRK Strategy Center in KIMEP University.

Dr. Gianluca Spezza completed his Ph.D. in international relations at the International Institute of Korean Studies, University of Central Lancashire (UK) at the end of 2017 under the guidance of professor Hazel Smith, a foremost expert on North Korea. His current research interests include North Korean society – particularly the education sector – and the relationship between North Korea and International Organizations, specifically UNICEF, UNDP, and UNESCO. Dr. Spezza is also interested in comparative analyses of North Korea vis-a-vis other totalitarian regimes, the national identity and national interest of the two Koreas, state compliance with international norms, and the influence of beliefs on politics. Aside from his academic work, he writes as a freelance analyst and op-ed writer for NK News and IRIN news. Since 2012, his work has on North Korea been either published or featured on The Guardian, BBC, Newsweek Korea, Business Insider, Asia Newsdesk, DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation), and Radio RAI (Italian National Broadcast). His publications include a chapter in the North Korea Atlas (Damdi, 2014), and a chapter in the forthcoming “De-demonizing North Korea”, by NIAS Press in Copenhagen. Dr. Spezza also co-authored Icons of Rhetoric, a media-literary project on North Korean media and society, together with UK photographer Chris Barrett, in 2015. Dr. Spezza holds a Master in Contemporary History from the University of Torino, Italy, and a Master of Social Science in Asian Studies (IR) from the University of Turku, Finland.

Aigerim Kalybay is an Associate Professor at the Department of Economics. After graduating from L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University in 1998 she received a research fellow position at the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan. She worked at the Institute of Mathematics for six years, during which in 2002 she attained the degree of Candidate in Physical and Mathematical Sciences. In 2004 she received a grant from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for a two-year postgraduate study at the Luleå University of Technology, where she defended her PhD Thesis in 2006. In the same year she joined KIMEP.

Dr Nurseit Niyazbekov is an assistant professor in the Department of International Relations in KIMEP University in Almaty, Kazakhstan. He is researching and consulting various international media and think tanks in the areas of post-communist transitions, democratization, Central Asian state building and protest mobilization. He was a visiting research fellow at the University of Michigan and SciencePO. He obtained his PhD and MSc degrees in Politics and Sociology from the University of Oxford.

Nygmet Ibadildin graduated in 1995 from Kazakh State University with major in Philosophy.  He made his Master of Arts in International relations in California State University at Fresno. He defended his PhD dissertation in 2011 in University of Tampere, School of Management. Title of dissertation is Role Of New And Old Institutional Framework In Combating The Resource Curse In Kazakhstan”. Dissertation grade is Magna cum laude approbatur.

He was editor and journalist in the Energy of Kazakhstan magazine and in the newspaper Vremya Po form 1999-2002.

Worked in different schools in Kazakhstan and abroad.

Research interests are political economy of natural resources, institutional development, Post-Soviet institutions and discourse analysis.

A professional journalist, experienced university professor, worked as an editor in the newspapers and magazines, taught Journalism courses at universities. Was awarded an “Y. Altynsarin” medal by the Ministry of Education of Kazakhstan for the remarkable contribution to teaching and upbringing the young generation. “The Best Faculty of the AY 2016-2017”.

Frederick Emrich earned BA in Media Arts and an MA in Media arts from the University of Arizona. His previous appointments were as Sessional Lecturer at Carleton University, as Consultant on Web Site Redesign with the Soros Foundation Kazakhstan and as researcher for the Credibility Project at the American Library Association. He also was an editor for the Information Commons Project at the American Library Association.

Nickolay Povetkin earned a Diploma in English language teaching from Ablay-Khan Kazakhstan State University in 2000 and an MA in Economics from KIMEP University in 2002. He joined KIMEP in 2002.

Dr. Altay Mussurov obtained his doctorate in Economics from the University of Wales. Before joining KIMEP, he worked as a consultant for the World Bank and then as a tutorial leader at the LSE Summer School, after which he was a research associate at Sheffield University. He has taught courses in macroeconomics, development economics and labor economics, and he is also involved in supporting the internship program. His recent research focuses on questions concerning marital sorting and compensation for danger. In a project supported by the International Development Research Centre (Canada), he examined questions concerning employment decisions and earnings in the formal and informal wage employment.

Aliya Tankibayeva holds a master degree of Public Administration with specializations in Public Management and Public Finance. Professor Dennis Soltys obtained his PhD from the Department of Political Science, University of Toronto.

He has served on many KIMEP committees, especially concerning accreditations and quality assurance, and is currently the chair of the Department of Public Administration and International Development.

In his 15 years at KIMEP Dr. Soltys has taught a wide variety of courses, including graduate courses in research methods and thesis-writing, public policy of Kazakhstan, comparative education policy, and organization theory. He has publications in top international journals such as Journal of Central Asia, Comparative Education, International Journal (Canada) and Foreign Policy (USA), complemented by numerous conference papers published in Kazakhstan.

His main research interests include the cultural foundations and systemic design of public education in developed and transitional countries, development of civil society in transitional countries, and the public policy of Kazakhstan.
