Dr. Anar Shaikenova

Dr. Anar Shaikenova is a well-established professional in public administration and public policy. She defended her doctoral thesis in regulation and governance, focusing on policy learning and policy capacities in Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Russia. Her other research areas include strategic trade controls (STCs), economic sanctions, compliance, and the role of Central Asian states in nuclear non-proliferation and international security, given her nine years of work experience with the US Department of State Export Control and Border Security Program. She also possesses a wide network of professional and personal contacts due to her outstanding communication and relationship management skills.
Jeremy Lonjon
Communications & Research Director

Jeremy Lonjon is the Communications & Research Director at the Office of the President and contributes to the work of the DPRK Strategic Research Center at KIMEP University. He holds a BBA in Marketing from the ICN Business School in Nancy, France, and from the Russian Academy of Economics named after Plekhanov in Moscow, Russia. He also holds an M.A. in International Relations and European Studies from the University of Strasbourg in France. His research interests include the post-Soviet space with a focus on Central Asia.

James De-La-Haye is a Research Assistant at KIMEP University’s DPRK Strategic Research Center. His work focuses on international relations, economic and social development, public policy, and project governance, shaped by his experience in academia, NGOs, and EU-funded projects.

Dr. Qiangyu “Jerry” Wang
Non-Resident Research Fellow

Dr. Qiangyu Wang is an Associate Professor of Finance at Capital University of Economics
and Business and a Non-Resident Research Fellow at the DPRK Strategic Research Center,
KIMEP University. His research specialization covers energy finance and international financial systems. He holds a DBA from KIMEP University, an LL.M. from Sun Yat-sen University, and a BSc in Management from Xi’an Jiaotong University. In his capacity as Research Fellow, he bridges academic research with policy-oriented work focused on economic reform and development in Northeast Asia and geopolitical dynamics among regional powers. He facilitates the Center’s partnerships with Chinese universities, research institutions and think tanks, coordinates its research activities in China, and provides linguistic support through translating policy documents and academic works.

Ulan Nukan

Ulan Nukan is Director of the China Affairs Office at KIMEP University and a PhD candidate in Comparative Politics at the School of International Studies, Peking University. His research focuses on Central Asia’s global relations and China’s foreign policy, with a policy interest in regional security dynamics in Northeast and Central Asia.

Dr. Jungho Baek
Non-Resident Research Fellow
Ph.D in Resource Economics, Michigan State University, USA
Dr. Jungho Baek is a Ladessa Hall Nordale Professor of Economics in the College of Business and Security Management (CBSM) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and a non-resident research fellow at the DPRK Strategic Research Center at KIMEP University. His primary research areas include international trade, energy economics, resource economics, environmental economics, and econometric modeling. He has published extensively in these fields, with over 130 articles in international refereed journals. His current research on North Korea examines economic development strategies and the optimal allocation of development funds to support sustainable growth. He previously served as the inaugural endowed chair in Korea Economic Studies at the East-West Center and is the founding Editor-in-Chief of Commodities.

Ambassador John Everard
Former UK Ambassador to the DPRK and Contributor to the DPRK Strategic Research Center
M.A. in Chinese, Cambridge University, UK
John Everard served in the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office for twenty-seven years, working in Austria, Bosnia, Chile, and China (twice). He served as Ambassador three times, in Belarus, Uruguay and lastly in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) from 2006-2008. After his retirement from the diplomatic service in 2008 he was appointed Pantech Fellow at the Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center at Stanford University from 2010-2011. During this time he contributed to various academic works, including a chapter in Troubled Transition (Stanford APARC 2012). He was then appointed as Coordinator of the United Nations Security Council Panel of Experts established pursuant to Security Council Resolution 1874 (dealing with sanctions on the DPRK). He withdrew from that position in November 2012 and has since written extensively for the media and broadcast, both on Korean issues and on international affairs generally.
He published a book Only Beautiful, Please in 2012 that described his experiences of living and working in the DPRK and discussed some of the challenges presented by that country.
