Packing
Here is a rough list of things we recommend to bring with you:
- Copies of all official documents (passport, visa, insurance card, etc.) – It’s always good to keep the originals and copies apart in case the original is lost. You are not obliged to have ID when you are out around the city. In case you have a late outing or take a trip to other cities it is good to have copy of your ID or the original with you.
- Medicine – You will find a large variety of medicine in the local drug stores, but there may not be the same range of choices or specific products you have in your home country. If you are using specific medicine, please check in advance if they are available or take these items with you when you come to Kazakhstan.
- Laptop – KIMEP has WI-FI access in the study rooms, library and in the Black and Brown café on campus. There are also many internet clubs and cafes with WI-FI located throughout the city.
Some insider tips:
- Almaty’s climate and nature makes it a pleasant and interesting place to live. Almaty has an extreme continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The weather in Almaty during the day can change quickly from sun to rain, but it is mostly sunny. Arriving in summer, the average temperature is around +25-35°C. The average temperature in winter is minus 10-15°C. We advise you to take warm clothes for the winter.
- For trips to the mountains, which form a big part in the life of young people here, you need adequate equipment. This includes hiking boots, loose fitting athletic clothing and pullovers.
- It is possible to find almost all food items, goods and equipment that you need for everyday life in Almaty. The availability of some products varies and the range of choices may be different from your home country. It is best to stock up on your favorite national items when they are available or bring these items with you to Kazakhstan.
