College Overview
ABOUT THE COLLEGE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES
The College of Social Sciences has over 1,000 students and about 40 faculty in four departments – Economics, International Relations and Regional Studies Journalism and Mass Communications, and Public Administration, and, each offering a Bachelors and a Masters degree in their fields. We recognize that students enroll in one of our degree programs to meets two fundamental needs:
- to establish themselves, eventually, in a career that will provide them with a good and reliable source of income, and a high level of job satisfactions and social status; and
- to have a university-life experience that are both enjoyable and personally fulfilling in the context of their holistic development as: a
- individuals (with a better knowledge of themselves, and with a critical self-awareness of the knowledge, values and attitudes that mold their relationships with others);
- potential post-graduate students abroad (with the required discipline-based knowledge and the critical thinking, interpersonal, communications, learning, and research skills need to succeed); and
- as an educated citizens (with a sound knowledge of the world in which they live).
We are becoming a world-class provider of social science education, evidenced by our dual graduate degree programs with three world-class universities – the University of Glasgow (United Kingdom), the Humboldt University (Germany) and theUniversity of San Francisco (United States of America). Our vision is that our students will undertake our degrees knowing that they have been judged by the international academic community to be of a high standard. This would add considerable value to their degrees in the local labor market and would make their transition to further study abroad seamless. We are, thus, working with an array of European and American universities towards offering further dual graduate degree programs, and having credit-transfer arrangements in place that will allow our masters graduates to transfer some of their KIMEP credits to graduate social science programs offered by our partner universities. We are also working towards international degree accreditation, beginning with our Public Administration degrees, for which we are going to seek accredited this academic year by the European Association of Public Administration Accreditation.
Our contribution to the KIMEP mission extends beyond teaching into research and scholarship. We have a significant and vibrant group of active researchers, a number of whom are of world standing, including Honorary Professors. There are also a growing number of graduate students engaged in research. To provide a focus for our research and scholarship activities, we have now established four academic research centers
- The Central Asian Studies Center
- The European Studies Center
- Central Asian Center for Media and Society
- The Socio-legal Justice Center
Research is important to us, as we believe that teaching, especially at the senior undergraduate and graduate levels, must be informed and enriched by research and scholarship.
We want all our students to experience a vibrant academic community, one in which they have opportunities:
- to mix with foreign exchange and visiting field-work students;
- to learn from, and to be mentored by, visiting professors and our well qualified and experienced foreign and local faculty;
- to study abroad for credits at one of our world-class partner universities; and
- to be paid teaching and research assistance working with faculty committed to delivering high quality teaching and learning, and research.
College of Social Science is, thus, committed to
- to providing teaching and learning of the highest quality;
- to providing choice and flexibility in its degree programs; and
- to achieving and sustaining innovation in the way it delivers its degree programs.
