RESULTS OF CONTEST IN INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW

KIMEP University and School of law take pride of their winners!

On January 22 – 24, 2016 School of Law of KIMEP University hosted a student competition in International Humanitarian Law (IHL). IHL is the area of international law based on principles of humanism and aimed at human personality protection in the conditions of armed conflicts.

This competition is unique, since it’s methodic is based on role play. Within frames of the competition participants had to review a number of legal cases related to factual circumstances of an imaginary armed conflict. While resolving the tasks contestants played roles of different parties to the conflict and of humanitarian organizations staff, demonstrated their knowledge of international humanitarian law, international public law, human rights, international criminal law to the contest jurors, as well as the ability to defend their points of view and to live through the roles assigned.

This year the contest was attended by 12 teams (36 students) representing law schools and universities of Almaty and Astana. With a great interest teams scrutinized the tasks assigned and took an active part in resolving the conflict reflected in the fable.

Upon results of the competition, the jury composed of Zarifa Mukhitdinova and Marat Aminov – the experts of Regional Representative Office of International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) in Central Asia, Aizhan Oshakbayeva – the program coordinator of Soros Kazakhstan Foundation and Tatyana Li, the senior lawyer of Ernst & Young Kazakhstan, have determined the finalists: the first and the third place were given to teams from KIMEP University and the second place was taken by the team from Kazakh Humanities and Law University (KazHLU). The winner team was awarded a cup for the first place. Also an individual cup was awarded to the best speaker of the competition – Abilkhair Mergaliyev, the student of a finalist team from KazHLU. All finalists received books on international humanitarian law from ICRC and special t-shirts from KIMEP University. Yelena Kim, the General Director of Red Crescent Society of the Republic of awarded certificates and memorable gifts to the contest winners.

The victory of KIMEP students in the competition in international humanitarian law became the first one this year. KIMEP University and its School of Law take pride of our winners – Asror Fayzov, Sultan Sakhariyev and Madina Tursynbay demonstrated a high level of preparation and exceptional abilities to asses and play their assigned roles, as well as to firmly defend their points of view. Students that took the third place – Nurzhan Baimurzin, Meruert Tnaliyeva and Sanzhar Userbayev in the nearest future will start preparing to the Republican Olympiad in international law, which is to take place on April 2016 in KazHLU.

KIMEP University expresses a special gratitude to all students, who took an active part in the competition and to all faculty, staff and students, who helped to arrange and accompany it as well as to organize preparatory courses of participant teams.
